The journey of life is so full of beauty. The twists and turns, the people who weave in and out of each other’s paths like lines drawn by the wind, unless we’re ready they depart as frameless memories that we can only wish to have captured. It’s almost as if at some point in time we all share a common denominator with the people, places, things, and ideas that visit us. Every moment is a fragment of time that your number will spend with someone or something that you are mathematically compatible with based on the innumerable host of factors that lead you and them to share each others worlds.

In 1967 my Dad had just traveled across the U.S. in an MGB from New York City to San Francisco to live on a commune in Novato. While there in the midst of the revolution of the mind that was the sixties; a famous photographer by the name of Dennis Stock visited and took the photo that you see above. This picture was published in 1968 as the cover to Mr. Stock’s photo essay entitled California Trip. To find a copy of this book these days is quite rare however tonight I had the sweet pleasure of a run in with that rarity.

I found myself at a brick warehouse in the Arts District of Downtown LA. The atmosphere was beautiful. Just inside of an enormous garage door that poured christmas light over the sidewalk and onto the street were walls decorated with old fashioned rustic gems from the industrial era. I saw giant iron wrenches that must have seen building the transcontinental railroad, wiry lamps that could have lit your grandmothers sewing, and paint peeled cruiser bikes more than twice my age posing on flat tires and lit by spotlights. As the DJ spun Dylan tunes that echoed off the high ceilings good people enjoying good times moved about the floor, some perusing the warehouse gallery, others washing down German Wurstkuche sausage with Blue Ribbon beer. Shortly after joining the scene I found myself looking through a collection of artifacts to stumble upon the sweet image of my Father when he was the same age as me. Dennis Stock happened to be in the right place at the right time and captured a perfect fleeting moment before it could get away. Now 43 years later I am writing about it.
